For healthcare professionals in the San Ramon area, maintaining current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) credentials is non-negotiable. However, traditional, full-day classroom courses can be difficult to fit into a demanding schedule. The American Heart Association® has developed a flexible alternative: Self-Guided Learning™ courses. This approach combines convenient online learning with a local, independent skills verification, and it’s now available at the Safety Training Seminars office in San Ramon, located at Bishop Ranch 1, 6101 Bollinger Canyon Rd, Suite 335A.
This article explains how this modern training pathway works, its specific benefits for medical and healthcare professionals, and how it differs from other learning models. We will cover the two-part process, from the True Adaptive™ online portion to the hands-on session at a CPR Verification Station™ learning center, ensuring you understand exactly what to expect.
Self-Guided Learning™ is an American Heart Association course format designed for maximum flexibility. It separates the cognitive learning from the hands-on skills practice. First, you complete the required educational modules online at your own pace. Then, you schedule a time to visit a CPR Verification Station™ learning center to perform your psychomotor skills. Upon successful completion of both parts, you receive your official American Heart Association Course Completion eCard.
This model is ideal for:
This learning approach empowers you to take control of your training schedule without compromising the quality and standards set by the American Heart Association®.
The Self-Guided Learning™ course pathway consists of two distinct but equally important steps. You must complete both to earn your AHA provider eCard.
The first part of the course is an online, self-paced cognitive learning activity. This is not a simple “watch-and-click” video series. These courses, known as HeartCode® Complete, use sophisticated True Adaptive™ learning powered by Area9 Lyceum.
This adaptive technology customizes the educational journey for each learner. It continuously assesses your knowledge and confidence on various topics. If you demonstrate mastery in a particular area, the system allows you to move on quickly. If you have knowledge gaps, it presents targeted content, interactive patient scenarios, and algorithm-based exercises to help you build competence.
This personalized pathway ensures your study time is efficient and effective. You focus only on what you need to learn, reinforcing your understanding of critical concepts before moving on to the hands-on portion. You can complete this online learning activity from any compatible device—desktop, laptop, or tablet—whenever it fits your schedule.
After finishing the online portion, the next step is to complete your hands-on skills session. This is done independently at the CPR Verification Station™ learning center located at the Safety Training Seminars office in San Ramon.
This is a key differentiator from other training formats. There is no instructor facilitating this session. Instead, you interact with a high-fidelity manikin that provides real-time, audiovisual feedback on your performance. The station’s technology objectively measures your skills—such as compression depth, rate, and recoil, as well as ventilation technique—against the AHA’s strict guidelines.
You can practice and repeat the required skills as many times as necessary to achieve a passing score. This objective assessment ensures a standardized and consistent evaluation for every learner. Upon successfully demonstrating your skills, the system records your completion. Together with your completed online module, this fulfills the course requirements.
It is crucial to understand the specific terminology to avoid confusion. The American Heart Association offers several distinct learning approaches, and Self-Guided Learning™ is unique among them.
While both models involve an online component, the skills session is the primary difference. In a traditional Blended Learning course, you complete online modules and then attend a scheduled, in-person skills session led by an AHA Instructor.
In contrast, a Self-Guided Learning course involves a skills session that is completed independently at a CPR Verification Station™ learning center. There is no instructor present to provide coaching or evaluation. The feedback is delivered entirely through the technology.
Do not confuse the HeartCode® Complete courses with the Resuscitation Quality Improvement® (RQI®) program. While both may use similar station technology, their purpose is different.
HeartCode® Complete is a course-based model for initial or renewal training. It follows a defined pathway to earn an American Heart Association Course Completion eCard for BLS, ACLS, or PALS.
RQI®, on the other hand, is a continuous quality improvement program designed for ongoing skills maintenance through low-dose, high-frequency practice sessions. It is not a course that results in a traditional two-year provider card. When enrolling for your BLS, ACLS, or PALS course completion, ensure you are selecting the HeartCode® Complete option.
In professional communications and documentation, precise language matters. American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS courses lead to an American Heart Association Course Completion eCard, not a professional “certification.”
While “certification” is often used informally, it can imply a form of licensure or professional credentialing. The AHA provides verification of successful training completion according to its established curriculum standards. Using the correct terminology ensures accuracy and compliance. Upon finishing your Self-Guided Learning™ course, you will receive an eCard that verifies you have successfully completed the American Heart Association training. This eCard is accepted nationwide.
The availability of a CPR Verification Station™ learning center in San Ramon offers a convenient and effective solution for busy healthcare providers. The Safety Training Seminars office at Bishop Ranch 1 provides a local hub for you to complete the final step of your AHA training on your own schedule.
The learner journey is straightforward:
Enroll in a Self-Guided Learning™ course for BLS, ACLS, or PALS.
Complete the True Adaptive™ online learning activity at your own pace.
Schedule and complete your hands-on skills session at the CPR Verification Station™ learning center in San Ramon.
Receive your American Heart Association Course Completion eCard immediately upon successful completion of both components.
This modern approach to life-saving training respects your time and expertise. It provides a personalized educational experience and an objective, standardized skills evaluation, ensuring you are prepared and proficient in the latest AHA guidelines.
